DraftKings Tops for June Massachusetts Sports Betting

Hometown DraftKings continued its strong showing of Massachusetts sports betting as the operator reported another stellar month in the commonwealth.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported $332.03 million in sports betting handle for the month. Online sports betting handle accounted for $323.5 million of the total handle in the state.

The commission reported more than $32.2 million in taxable sports betting revenue for the month, which resulted in $6.43 million in taxes.

DraftKings Continue Strong Massachusetts Showing

DraftKings was by far the top operator in the state in terms of total handle and taxable revenue. The sports betting operator reported $159.35 million in total online sports betting handle for the month, about $63 million more than FanDuel’s $96.07 million total online sports betting handle.

DraftKings also produced more than $15.1 million in taxable gaming revenue, nearly $5 million more than FanDuel for the month.

DraftKings also topped all other operators in handle and taxable revenue in May.

In its first full month of operation, Fanatics Sportsbook reported $1.897 million in online sports betting handle and reported $221,608 in taxable revenue. It translated to $44,321 in taxes for the state.

On the retail sportsbook side, Encore Boston Harbor topped all three casinos with $16.7 million in handle and $1.4 million in total taxable revenue. Here are the full retail sports betting details for the month:

  • Encore Boston Harbor (WynnBET): $4,536,244
  • Plainridge Park Casino (Barstool Sportsbook): $3,085,981
  • MGM Springfield (BetMGM): $894,975

Massachusetts Gaming Commission Searching for Leadership

MGC Executive Director Karen Wells stepped down from her position on July 14, 2023. Wells has been with the MGC for the last 10 years. The MGC appointed general counsel Todd Grossman as interim executive director.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission gave Wells a fond farewell. during its Wednesday, July 12 meeting.

The commissioners all praised her devotion to the job, to the commission, and for navigating complex matters such as the state’s sports betting launch. MGC Chair Cathy Judd-Stein said the commission will miss Wells and her devotion to the job.

“We’re all really going to miss you,” she said.

The MGC is currently screening candidates for the position.

The MGC will also be lacking in another position. The Commission is also losing Loretta Lillios, Director of Investigations and Enforcement Bureau, next month.
