Battling for a job, rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson continues to be a big story for Cleveland. He’ll get the start facing Philly.

Against Washington he was completing 9 of 10 passes for 102 yards and a TD, finishing with a 102 passer rating. In the Hall of Fame Game, Thompson-Robinson went 8-for-11 for 82 yards and one touchdown. He also carried the ball six times for 36 yards.

Most, if not all of Cleveland’s starters aren’t expected to play in this game. It will be interesting to see if the Cleveland backups on defense can handle Philly’s potent run game. The Browns defense was 32nd at stopping the run last season and ranked 31st in yards allowed before contact.

All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett (foot) is on Cleveland’s injury list.

The Eagles won last year’s game by a point at Cleveland, but they’ve won and covered a 3.5-point spread in all three NFL Preseason games played at Philadelphia between these two teams since Cleveland re-entered the league in 1999. The Fanatics Sportsbook will offer legal sports betting markets on professional and college football, basketball, hockey and baseball, as well as golf, tennis, motorsports, boxing, MMA and more.

A Fanatics Sportsbook representative declined to comment on pending licensure in other states.

Fanatics is hoping for a transfer of PointsBet’s New York online sports betting license as quickly as possible. PointsBet’s New York online sports betting license was one of the jewels in the Fanatics acquisition of the company’s U.S. assets. In late June, Fanatics improved its bid to PointsBet for $225 million, topping DraftKings’ final offer of $195 million for the company’s U.S. assets.

According to the acquisition details provided from the original Fanatics/PointsBet deal in May, Fanatics will begin acquiring PointsBet assets for three states this month. It’s unknown what state assets will first be turned over to Fanatics. PointsBet will hand over access to three more states on a rolling basis until all U.S. entities are acquired by Fanatics Betting and Gaming by May 2024 at the latest.

New York State Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer revealed recently the commission will evaluate Fanatics for suitability before making a recommendation on the transfer of the PointsBet license.

A final recommendation on the license will likely be made during the commission’s September meeting.

DraftKings continues to enjoy its Massachusetts sports betting homefield advantage as the Boston-based sports betting operator again reported the top handle and revenue figures in the commonwealth.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission reported $294,924,777 in sports betting handle for July, which resulted in $29.4 million in taxable sports betting revenue. Online sports betting accounted for the majority of handle at $288.1 million.

The MGC noted $5.8 million in sports betting tax revenue for the month.

DraftKings, FanDuel Remain Top Operators

DraftKings again reported the top sports betting handle and tax revenue for the month, noting $144.86 million in online sports betting handle and $2.87 million in sports betting tax revenue. FanDuel was second in the commonwealth with $86.18 million in online sports betting handle and $1.97 million in tax revenue.

DraftKings also topped all other operators in handle and taxable revenue in June.

Fanatics saw a nearly $500,000 increase in its sports betting handle from June, noting $2.3 million for July. Betr continues to struggle in the commonwealth, as its online sports betting handle dipped to just $155,581 for the month.

Recently, Massachusetts Gaming Commission Interim Executive Director Todd Grossman said the commission will evaluate daily fantasy sports (DFS) offerings in the commonwealth as DFS operators are recently experiencing increased scrutiny for their offerings nationwide.

Grossman revealed the commission would begin a review of DFS operator and offerings in the state in light of several public examinations across the country.

“There’s been a great deal of activity surrounding the boundaries of sports wagering and daily fantasy sports and whether there’s some overlap between the two. That is to say, whether there are certain activities offered by DFS operators that may be considered sports wagering activity. That’s been addressed in a number of jurisdictions now and has been discussed publicly. I wanted to note we are certainly aware of this issue and we’re in the process of reviewing it,” Grossman said.

Longhorns Might Actually be Back

In the eyes of the oddsmakers in Las Vegas, it’s Texas and then everyone in the Big 12 conference this season. Despite having not won a conference title since 2009, the Longhorns are +100 favorites to win the Big title in their final year before departing for the SEC.

Not only is Texas favored to win the Big 12, but they also have +320 odds to make the College Football Playoff and +1500 odds to win it. Steve Sarkisian’s team returns 15 starters from the team that went 8-5 during the 2022-23 CFB season.

Quarterback Quinn Ewrers returns after throwing for 2,177 yards and 15 TDs last season. He’ll have one of his favorite targets back in Xavier Worthy, who had 760 receiving yards and 9 TDs in 2022-23. However, the Longhorns must overcome the loss of their leading rusher Bijan Robinson (NFL).

A big reason Texas is the clear favorite in the Big 12 is the continuity of the offensive line. The entire starting five from the 2022 season is returning, with each player averaging 20.1 starts in burnt orange. The Longhorns had an excellent run game last season, averaging 188.2 yards per contest on the ground.

Texas finally living up to expectations and winning a Big 12 title will likely depend on Ewers taking another step, the defense continuing its strong play, and other players stepping up in place of Robinson. Texas went 0-3 last season in games in which they were held under three yards per carry on the ground.

Oklahoma, Kansas State & Other Contenders

If it isn’t Texas winning the Big 12 in 2023, oddsmakers project Oklahoma (+340) and Kansas State (+500) have the next-best chance of taking the crown. The Sooners are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 6-7 campaign, while the Wildcats are coming off an impressive 10-4 season that saw them win the Big 12 title.

Even though KSU had a much stronger season last year, it isn’t hard to see why the Sooners have better odds in 2023. OU returns its top offensive weapon in QB Dillon Gabriel, plus 78% of their returning production on defense, which ranks 21st in the country,

Kansas State does return QB Will Howard, but the Wildcats must overcome the loss of their top offensive player Deuce Vaughn, who rushed for 1,392 yards and 18 TDs in 2022. Defensively, the Wildcats have lost leading tacklers Drake Cheatum, Josh Hayes, and Julius Brent.

TCU is another team dealing with major turnover, hence why they are significant longshots despite reaching the CFP title game last year. Sonny Dykes’ club will field 11 new starters this season, having to replace superstars Max Duggan, Quentin Johnston, and Kendra Miller.

2023 Big 12 Championship Predictions

The Big 12 conference is one of the harder ones to predict in the college football odds. Various teams have a chance to win due to the balance in the conference, but Texas certainly has the talent — at least on paper — to finally get over the hump.

When you look at recent Texas recruiting classes, you can see the Longhorns ranked 3rd in 2023, 5th in 2022, and 15th in 2021. The 2023 season might provide the perfect storm for Sarkisian’s team, with no Big 12 teams appearing in the top 10 of the preseason AP Poll.

Quinn Ewers has been rising in the Heisman odds, with reports suggesting he’s become more vocal and focused. His talent is the primary reason we’re backing Texas at plus-money to win the title, but don’t sleep on OU and their defense in year two under Venables.

Pep Guardiola’s Man City reached this game by virtue of their Champions League title last season which saw them defeat Inter Milan 1-0.

But Man City were dominant on all fronts last season winning the Premier League as well as the FA Cup. Erling Haaland also broke the EPL’s record for goals in a season.

This offseason City lost a key contributor in Ilkay Gundogan who departed for Barcelona, but they did bring in Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol.

The Citizens got the season rolling in much the same fashion as they ended last season. City took the lead over the newly promoted Burnley on Friday just four minutes into the game and were up 2-0 at half, with both goals coming from Haaland. They added to their lead in the 75′ with a Rodri goal, before Burnley pulled on back late in stoppage time in the 94′ minute. That was Burnley’s only shot on target during the game.

Prior to their EPL kick-off, Man City were was also involved in the Community Sheild, where they drew Arsenal 1-1 before going on to lose in penalties.

Sevilla Veterans of Super Cup Competition

Sevilla are the Europa League kings. Despite a poor season domestically and crashing out of the Champions League tournament, they went on to win their tournament-best seventh UEL title. All seven times they’ve played in the Europa League final, they’ve won. Last season they drew AS Roma 1-1 before going on to win in penalties.

Sevilla got their 2023/24 campaign started last Friday as well, hosting Valencia in one of the first games of the Spanish season. Valencia scored first one hour into the match and despite Sevilla drawing level soon after, Javi Guerra put Valencia ahead for good in the 88′ minute for the 2-1 win. Sevilla’s Loic Bade took a red card in the 81′ minute which didn’t help. He will though be availale for the Super Cup.

UEFA Super Cup History

This is the first time Man City will be playing in this competition, having just won their first Champions League title, and having never won the Europa League.

For Sevilla, they are veterans of this cup competition, having won once (2006), but participating five other times (2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2020).

You would think that the edge in this sort of competition would typically slant towards the Champions League-winning side, however, that has not been the case in recent years, generally, at least.

Last year the UCL winners Real Madrid did defeat UEL winners Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0. However, the Europa League entry had won in eight of the previous nine years. Atletico Madrid in 2018, the 2017-18 UCL winners are the only other UCL winners outside of Real Madrid in the past ten years.

Both Spain and England have been well-represented in this match. 13 of the 20 teams playing in the game in the past ten years have come from La Liga. Five of the remaining seven have come from the EPL.

Bets on the draw have also been cashing like crazy in this matchup. Six of the past eight have gone to extra-time as well as seven of the past ten.

Manchester City vs Sevilla Prediction

If you look at the stats earlier and see Sevilla as the 12th place team in La Liga last season, this looks like a huge mismatch. However, they started the season off in horrendous form and were actually in threat of relegation for part of the season. But the things turned around when Jose Luis Mendilibar was named as the new manager and Sevilla salvaged their season. They’re a better team than that 12th place position.

Still, Sevilla haven’t had much luck in this competition having lost their past five Super Cups. They also enter the season with some injuries and players not yet registered so aren’t at full strength. Their record versus Pep’s City is also poor reading at 0-0-4, including two losses during the Champions League Group Stage last year, 4-0 and 3-1.

Man City already missed a chance to claim some early silverware in the Community Shield. Pep will be eager to claim City’s first Super Cup win and we just saw that Haaland is already in top form with two goals last Friday.

Orioles vs Padres Pick: Baltimore moneyline (+110)

It’s taking oddsmakers a while to catch on to just how good the 2023 Baltimore Orioles are. The O’s sit first in the American League (74-45) and are now tied for the most road wins in all of baseball (38) after downing the Padres (4-1) last night in the first of their three-game set.

Today, Baltimore sends Jack Flaherty to the hill opposite San Diego’s Michael Wacha. Once the budding young ace of the Cardinals’ rotation, Flaherty’s career has been mired by injuries and inconsistency. But he still shows flashes of the dominant stuff that led the Cards to draft him in the first round back in 2014. In two starts with the Orioles since the deadline, Flaherty pitched one game (one run on four hits over 6.0 innings during a 6-1 win over Toronto) and touched-up once (three runs on six hits over 5.0 innings in an 8-2 loss to Houston).

He has ample history against the Padres’ lineup and modestly encouraging results. Over 61 total at-bats, San Diego’s lineup is hitting .231 with five doubles and no home runs.

Wacha has a sparkling 2.84 ERA on the season and has been one of the few highlights for a disappointing Padres team this year. But his xERA of 4.20 paints a much different picture. He’s been wildly fortunate this year and his career ERA of 3.97 is a more accurate reflection of who will be toeing the rubber for the Friars today.

Pick: Orioles moneyline (+110)

Phillies vs Blue Jays Pick: Philadelphia Moneyline First 3 Innings (-140)

Tuesday’s game in Toronto features a huge pitching mismatch between the Phillies’ Zach Wheeler and the Blue Jays’ Yusei Kikuchi. While the latter has the better ERA in 2023 (3.53 vs 3.74), he’s extremely lucky that’s the case. Kikuchi’s Expected ERA (xERA) per FanGraphs is well over four (4.26) and he has never previously recorded an ERA under 4.41 in his four-plus-year career.

Wheeler, on the other hand, has been the victim of some rotten luck to be saddled with an ERA in the high threes. His own xERA is 3.32 while his WHIP is a solid 1.11. He’s been a model of consistency for the Phillies in 2023, especially on the road lately. In his last three road starts, he’s scattered four runs across 19.2 innings of work.

Toronto has the more-potent lineup, but the difference isn’t terribly stark. The Jays sit 6th in WRC+ compared to the Phillies in 16th, but Philly is only two spots behind Toronto in wOBA (9th vs 11th) and actually sits ahead of the Blue Jays in slugging (8th vs 12th).

Kikuchi’s luck is going to even out eventually.

Pick: Phillies moneyline first 3 innings (-140)

Angels vs Rangers Pick: Ohtani Over 1.5 Total Bases (+130)

After getting shutout by Max Scherzer last night (11-0), the Angels will be thrilled to see Texas trot out Jordan Montgomery for Tuesday’s game. While the former Yankee/Cardinal has a highly respectable 3.38 ERA on the season, he’s vastly outperforming his peripherals. FanGraphs lists his xERA at 4.23 and his xFIP at 4.10.

Ohtani has limited experience against Montgomery, but did manage to crank a double off the lefty in one of his three at-bats. With 41 homers, 20 doubles, and seven triples this year, over half of Ohtani’s 133 hits have been for extra bases. Getting him at significant plus-money to record more than one total base – which could also be accomplished with multiple singles – is my favorite bet on this game.

The Florida sports betting landscape has been put into another holding pattern as West Flagler Associates filed a petition for an en banc hearing of a D.C. Circuit Court’s decision to restore a 2021 Florida gaming compact.

West Flagler Associates have long contended that the Florida gaming compact is illegal and should not allow online sports betting to take place outside of Indian lands. The en banc request, if granted, would put the case in front of all 11 judges of the D.C. Circuit Court, instead of just the original three-judge panel that unanimously agreed to overturn the original ruling.

But will an en banc rehearing be granted? What’s next if it isn’t? When could Florida actually see sports betting?

What’s Next In the Process?

First a little history. The Florida gaming compact was thrown out by U.S. District Court Judge Dabney L. Friedrich in November 2021 after West Flagler filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland for allowing the compact between the state and Seminole Tribe to proceed. Friedrich determined the compact violated the conditions set forth by the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) limiting tribal gaming to the confines of tribal lands. The Seminole Tribe argued in the gaming compact that because the servers that process the online sports bets are located on tribal land, then the bets themselves are placed on tribal lands.

This past June, a three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia unanimously agreed to overturn Friedrich’s ruling.

West Flagler Associates had until Monday, Aug. 14, to file a petition an en banc hearing of the ruling. If granted, an en banc hearing means the case would go before all 11 judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.

A spokesperson for the court told Sports Betting Dime that there is no timeline for an en banc hearing request and it can sometimes takes “months” for a determination to be made.

To be granted an en banc hearing, six of the 11 district judges have to approve the request. Considering that three judges have already ruled against West Flagler and would likely not approve the request, six of the remaining eight judges would have to agree to a rehearing.

Additionally, en banc hearings are rarely granted. The last en banc hearing to be granted was in 2021.

“The interpretation of a gaming statute is not on par with the kinds of issue the D.C. Circuit would typically grant a rehearing on. These are issues that present important federal constitutional questions, separation of power type issues, and this doesn’t strike me as the kind of case that reaches the threshold of being an issue of exceptional importance,” Daniel Wallach, a gaming law attorney, Founder of Wallach Legal and UNHLaw Sports Wagering, recently told SBD.

So When Could Florida See Sports Betting?

It depends on when the request is either granted or denied. If it’s granted, a rehearing can take months to play out before a final determination is made. If an en banc hearing request is denied, the original three-judge panel rule will go into effect after a week and the Seminole Tribe would be clear to launch sports betting.

It’s unlikely that the court will take “months” to determine if a rehearing is necessary, so if one is not granted Florida could see sports betting early on in the NFL season.

However, if a hearing is not granted, West Flagler still has legal options. It will have 90 days to request a writ of certiorari to hear the case with SCOTUS. Wallach previously told SBD he expects West Flagler to take this issue to SCOTUS if an en banc hearing is not granted.

“This is an unsettled question of law. Ultimately, the question of whether the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act applies to tribal gaming outside of Indian lands is a question that has been wrestled with in a number of previous federal court decisions.  The confusion over this issue has prompted proposed federal legislation. Two times this has prompted the Department of Interior to propose new rules recognizing that compact’s can includes provisions for online sports betting,” he said.

It’s also important to note that the Seminole Tribe could launch sports betting (and craps and roulette) in its casinos right now if it chooses. There is no injunction barring them from doing so, but the risk for the tribe may be too great, Wallach said.

In terms of being in their home state, both the Cleveland Guardians (57-62 , 61-58 ATS) and Cincinnati Reds (62-58, 75-45 ATS) are home for the next two games. However, in terms of being in their own ballpark, home cooking hasn’t amounted to a hill of beans in the battle of Ohio.

Rebounding from a 3-6 start, Reds right-hander Graham Ashcraft has won three of his last four decisions. Since June 30 he’s worked into the sixth inning in each of his eight starts. At home, Ashcraft is 3-6 with a 5.79 ERA in 13 starts. Overall, though, he’s 2-1 with a 2.11 ERA in six starts since the MLB All-Star break. Ashcraft has reduced opposition batting average (.290 to .211) and OPS (.839 to .639) significantly since the first half. At the same time, he’s increased his strikeouts per nine innings from 1.71 to 2.45.

Guardians vs Reds Prediction

The Guardians are 4-9 SU in their last 13 games, but 4-2 SU in their last six against the Reds. In fact, Cleveland is 4-1 SU in the last five games facing an NL Central opponent.

Florida sports betting will be further delayed. Whether its merely a few weeks or as long as a few months is now anyone’s guess, as West Flagler has submitted a request for an en banc hearing of a D.C. Circuit Court’s decision to restore a 2021 Florida gaming compact.

West Flagler, the plaintiffs in the hearing, had until midnight tonight to file a petition.

If they did not file a petition the official mandate restoring the Florida gaming compact would have gone into effect on Monday, Aug. 21, allowing the Seminole tribe to launch its Florida sports betting services, along with craps and roulette in its Florida casinos.

West Flagler Requests Rehearing En Banc

In late June, a three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the the District of Columbia unanimously agreed to overturn a ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Dabney L. Friedrich that declared a 2021 Florida gaming compact violated the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA).

The gaming compact was thrown out by Friedrich in November 2021. Ultimately, Friedrich determined the compact violated the conditions set forth by IGRA that limits tribal gaming to the confines of tribal lands. The Seminole Tribe argued in the gaming compact that because the servers that processed the online sports bets were located on tribal land, then the bets themselves were placed on tribal lands.

The three-judge panel for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the the District of Columbia disagreed with her ruling.

In West Flagler’s request, counsel for the plaintiff’s wrote that the Supreme Court’s ruling of Michigan v. Bay Mills Indian Community found the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA) regulates gaming on “Indian lands, and nowhere else.”

“The Opinion is erroneous and will create confusion, and thus rehearing is warranted. The Opinion relies on an interpretation of an IGRA provision itemizing the ancillary subject matters that are permissible in an IGRA compact. As shown by both the plain text of this provision and the overall legislative purpose of IGRA, this provision cannot reasonably be read to allow IGRA compacts to contain provisions that on their face seek to authorize gaming activities off of Indian lands,” counsel wrote in the document.

If granted, the en banc rehearing will include all judges of the court, not just a three-judge panel, to hear the case.

A Seminole Tribe spokesperson told Sports Betting Dime through email that it’s important to remember that the original decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit was unanimously in favor of the Department of the Interior and the gaming compact approval.

“It’s important to note the three Judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit issued a unanimous decision in favor of the U.S. Department of the Interior, which approved the Gaming Compact between the Seminole Tribe and the State of Florida,” the Seminole Tribe spokesperson wrote.

Will Request Be Granted?

But just because an appeal is requested does not mean one will automatically be granted. Daniel Wallach, a gaming law attorney, Founder of Wallach Legal and UNHLaw Sports Wagering, recently told Sports Betting Dime that he expected West Flagler to continue their fight in one way or another, but face long odds to have an en banc hearing  granted.

En banc hearings are rarely granted by the U.S. Court of Appeals, Wallach said, as the court typically grants only one review for every 500 three-judge panel decisions. An en banc hearing has not been granted since 2021, he noted.

“The interpretation of a gaming statute is not on par with the kinds of issue the D.C. Circuit would typically grant a rehearing on. These are issues that present important federal constitutional questions, separation of power type issues, and this doesn’t strike me as the kind of case that reaches the threshold of being an issue of exceptional importance,” Wallach said.

Philadelphia vs Miami Preview

Tournament favorites Miami are still standing in the Leagues Cup as despite a horrendous MLS campaign, the additions of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have transformed the Herons into a team that has now won five straight.

Miami beat Cruz Azul 2-1 and Atlanta United 4-0 in the group stage. They took down Orlando 3-1 in the round of 32, drew Dallas 4-4 before winning in PKs in the round of 16 and routed Charlotte 4-0 in the quarterfinals. Messi, as expected has been the star with eight goals and three assists, though an under the radar star in Robert Taylor has also emerged. Taylor has four goals and four assists in the Leagues Cup himself.

Philadelphia are still undefeated themselves. They cruised past Tijuana and Queretaro 3-1 and 5-1 respectively in the group stage. Then it was two PK wins. They drew DC 0-0 in the round of 32 and the New York Red Bulls 1-1 in the round of 16 before needing spot kicks to advance. In the quarterfinals they were moments away from going to penalties again before Chris Donovan scored ten minutes into second half stoppage time to give the Union a 2-1 win.

Daniel Gazdag leads the Union with four goals, but missed out last game with a knee injury and could still be out on Tuesday.

Philadelphia vs Miami Prediction

All five Miami games have gone Over 2.5 this tournament. But most of that is to do with Messi and Miami’s new-look offense. But not always. We just saw them go on the road to Dallas and concede four goals. In MLS, Miami has gone 1-1-9 on the road and has been outscored 21-7.

Now they get a Philly team who are absolutely dominant at Subaru Park. In MLS they are 8-2-1 with 23 goals scored and seven conceded. Across all comps they’ve now won ten straight at home and are undefeated in 15. The Union have lost just once in 38 home games and have only four home losses since the start of 2020.

Right now it’s hard to see Miami not scoring and likely advancing. It’s also hard to not to see Messi scoring. He’s priced at -138 in the Leagues Cup odds to score. Philly could be without Gazdag and Julian Carranza who left last game injured, but at home they should be able to contribute to the scoresheet. After that, I see someone scoring at least a second.

Nashville SC vs Monterrey Odds

In the Nashville vs Monterrey odds, oddsmakers are basically split. Nashville are slight +155 home favorites, while Liga MX side Monterrey are +162. Both are given identical odds of -110 to advance. Over 2.5 goals is favored at -125 and the Under is priced at even-money.

Nashville will host this second Leagues Cup semifinal earning their place by virtue of a 5-0 win over Minnesota United in the quarterfinals.

Prior to that, they beat Colorado 2-1, lost to Toluca 4-3, drew Cincinnati 1-1 in the round of 32 (winning in PKs), and drew Club America 2-2 (winning in PKs) in the round of 16.

Their opponents, Monterrey, are actually the only team that is a complete perfect 5-0-0 without needing penalties for any of those wins. They beat RSL and Seattle 3-0 and 4-2 respectively in the group stage. In the round of 32 they beat Portland 1-0 and then took out their Mexican rivals Tigres 1-0 in the round of 16.

German Berterame had been leading Los Rayados with five goals but suffered a fractured ankle and is out of the competition. But Monterrey is a deep team and others have stepped up with new addition Sergio Canales scoring in each of the past two games from the spot and Rogelio Funes Mori scoring his club record 154th goal last game versus LAFC. Monterrey found themselves down 2-0 to the MLS Cup champs in the quarterfinals until Canales’ 68′ minute PK which spurred the comeback. Monterrey scored three goals in 20 minutes to claim the 3-2 win.

Nashville vs Monterrey Prediction

5-0 looks great on paper, but Minnesota also took a red card a half hour into the game while it was still scoreless and from that moment the route was on. Full credit to the Yotes for taking advantage of the extra man and not letting up, but not all 5-0s are created equally.

This game could also see some goals, or at least one from each side. Nashville has kept only two clean sheets in their past 19 games across all comps. But they’ve also scored 13 goals in their five Leagues Cup games, which is tied for the third-most in the tournament. At home, they’ve found the back of the net in 12 of their past 13 games in all comps.

However, of the final four teams, the eight goals Nashville has conceded is the most. Monterrey (4), Philly (4) and Miami (6) have all conceded less.

Monterrey have scored in all five tournament games for a total of 12 goals. Going back over their past seven games in all comps, they’ve outscored their opponents by a 16-5 margin. They’re also usually locks to find the back of the net, having scored in 26 of their past 28 games.

I like both teams to score at -163 in the Nashville vs Monterrey odds, or for better value I see Monterrey continuing to carry the flag for Liga MX and advancing to the final.

Pick #1: Orioles vs Padres – Baltimore moneyline (+118)

The struggling Padres head home after a short road trip that saw the team go 1-4 against the Mariners and Diamondbacks. While San Diego has been significantly better at home (30-28) than on the road (26-34), they are facing a Baltimore squad that has the second-most road wins in the majors (37), not too mention the second-best overall record in the majors.

A perceived pitching mismatch between San Diego’s Yu Darvish and Baltimore’s Grayson Rodriguez is a big part of why the O’s are in plus-money on Monday night. But Rodriguez’s 5.84 ERA isn’t really an accurate portrayal of his season as a whole. The month of May represented a major speedbump for the 23-year-old, who gave up six-plus runs in three of five starts before being sent down to the minors.

Since returning to the big-leagues on August 17, he’s made five starts, giving up an average of 2.2 runs per game over roughly 5.2 innings. In short, he’s looked like the top pitching prospect he is. And those five starts have come against some of the MLB’s top teams: Dodgers, Astros, Rays, Blue Jays, and Yankees (whom he shutout over 6.1 innings).

On the other side, Yu Darvish is having an up-and-down season, sporting an era just over four. He’s been mostly excellent of late – at least in the box score – going at least six scoreless innings in three of his last five starts. But his WHIP is a concerningly high 1.25 and he’s walked multiple batters in seven of his past eight starts. He’s flirting with danger.

I will take the Orioles at +118 to continue their storybook season against a Padres team that keeps finding ways to lose.

The Rangers will be trotting out Max Scherzer for his third start since being acquired from the Mets. The 39-year-old Scherzer is finally showing signs of age with a 3.88 ERA an 1.14 WHIP. But he was excellent in his most-recent start for the Rangers (one run on three hits over seven innings against the A’s).

A handful of LA players, including Shohei Ohtani, have never faced Scherzer before, and the six who have have combined for a dismal .143 batting average and .349 OPS against the future Hall of Famer.

The promising Patrick Sandoval has seemed to recover from a mid-season doldrums that saw his ERA inflate from 2.93 in early May to 4.57 in late June.  He has surrendered two or fewer runs in each of his past five starts, and just six runs total over that span, while recording at least 15 outs (five full innings of work).

Like Scherzer, Sandoval has also found a lot of success against the bats he’ll be facing on Monday night. In 47 at-bats, the Rangers lineup has a paltry .106 average against the 26-year-old lefty with zero home runs, three doubles, and just two RBI.

If either of these lineups tee off on the opposing starter, it will be a reversal of trends.

Spain vs Sweden Preview

Of the four remaining teams, only Spain were second place finishers in the group stage. They were 2-0-1 in Group C beating Costa Rica 3-0, Zambia 5-0 and losing to Japan 4-0.

In the round of 16, Spain topped Switzerland 5-1, but in the quarterfinals they were pushed to the brink going to extra-time with the Netherlands after being drawn 1-1 at the end of regulation and 12 minutes of stoppage time. Spain had looked to be on their way to a win after Mariona Caldentey’s 81′ minute penalty. However, Stefanie van der Gragt got the Dutch on the board in the 91′ minute to force extra-time. That set the stage for Salma Paralluelo to score the winner in the second half of stoppage-time and give Spain a 2-1 win.

Sweden finished first in Group G at 3-0-0. They beat South Africa 2-1, Italy 5-0, and Argentina 2-0. That sent them into the round of 16 versus USA which ended 0-0 and needed penalties to see Sweden advance.

In the quarterfinals, Sweden came out strong and took a 2-0 lead 51 minutes into the game, before Japan pulled one back in the 87′ to come up short 2-1. Amanda Illestedt scored the game’s first goal and is Sweden’s leading scorer with four goals despite being a defender.

Sweden are the higher-ranked nation in this semifinal, but just barely, ranking third, to Spain’s sixth. This is their fourth time making the semifinals or further, including going out in the semis in 2019. For Spain, this is new territory. Never before had they reached the quarterfinals and this will now be their first time in the semifinals.

Spain are the tournament’s highest scorers with 15 goals (tied with Japan), while Sweden have still only allowed two goals, scoring 11 themselves. They have three players in Aitana Bonmati, Jennifer Hermoso and Alba Redondo.

While I love this Spain team this tournament, this is still new territory for them and they got blanked versus Japan, a team Sweden just beat. The Swedes have been knocking on the door of major tournament success for years. They made the semis at the Euros and lost in the final of the Olympics. Australia vs England Odds

The Australia vs England odds favor the Lionesses at +130 to win within 90 minutes. That gives England an implied probability of 43.48% to win. To advance by any means they are priced at -150 odds. The total for the game of 2.5 is lined at -211 for the Under and +160 for the Over.

The Lionesses of England are still perfect in the tournament. They were 3-0-0 in Group D beating Haiti 1-0, Denmark 1-0 and China 6-1. After a 0-0 draw with Nigeria in the round of 16 they went on to win in penalties, which set up a quarterfinal match with Colombia. Despite falling behind 1-0, England tied it up quickly to be drawn 1-1 at half and Alessia Russo’s second half goal proved enough for a 2-1 win. England got the win without leading scorer Lauren James who was suspended in the quarterfinals and will again be out here.

Australia vs England Prediction

Even with more games played than some teams, neither of these teams are among the top teams when it comes to scoring, despite each scoring a goal in four of five games. England have scored ten goals and Australia nine, which is only sixth and seventh overall.

Both have brought solid defenses to the tournament conceding just two (ENG) and three (AUS) goals. For Australia, those three goals all came in one game. The Under 2.5 is has gone 3-2 for both teams. Australia has kept four clean sheets during the tournament and England three.

They’ve played two common opponents in Nigeria and Denmark. England drew Nigeria 0-0 (PK win) and Australia lost 3-2. Both beat Denmark, Australia 2-0 and England 1-0.

To me this is a toss up and the Matildas as underdogs would offer the better value to advance to the final playing with the home crowd and the likely inclusion of Kerr for most of the game. But you certainly can’t count out the Euro winners England.
