Upcoming Match-ups

Every single Super Bowl has started with a coin toss to determine who will get the ball to start the game and which half of the field belongs to each team. Betting on that coin toss is still a somewhat new thing, however. Since it has become available it has quickly turned into one of the more popular and interesting Super Bowl props.

As the only true 50-50 proposition you can find, sportsbooks also charge a lot less juice on the coin toss. You could find either “heads” or “tails” available at +100 odds at DraftKings Sportsbook for the 2023 Super Bowl. For comparison, a game between two evenly matched teams generally sees -110 odds offered on each side to win.

As a result, this prop draws the attention of all types of sports bettors. One bettor reportedly placed a $5,000 bet on the Super Bowl 55 coin toss, siding with heads for a $9,850 return.

We’ve collected all the coin toss results from past Super Bowls, and also looked into how often the team who wins the coin toss goes on to win the game.

Super Bowl 57 sees the Kansas City Chiefs vs Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February 12 with kickoff scheduled for 6:30pm ET. Carl Cheffers is the head referee for the game and will therefore have the honor of flipping the coin. The Kansas City Chiefs will get to call the coin toss in the 2023 Super Bowl, as it is the AFC’s year to be the visiting team.

In Cheffers’ two previous Super Bowls, Super Bowl 51 and 55, we have seen one heads and one tails. Both visiting teams called for heads in those Super Bowls. The Patriots lost with tails turning up but Chiefs won the toss in their most recent Super Bowl appearance.

The Chiefs won the coin toss and won the game, breaking the streak of team’s who win the toss losing the game.

Super Bowl Coin Toss Trends

Here are a handful of trends we’ve unearthed from the Super Bowl coin toss results:

  • The coin toss has been Tails in seven of the last ten Super Bowls
  • The team who won the coin toss has lost the Super Bowl in eight of the last nine years, and is 25-32 all-time
  • The Cowboys hold the record for most Super Bowl coin toss wins with five
  • Tails is now 4-0 in Super Bowls held in Arizona, which is where Super Bowl 57 is being played

Now here’s a look at the heads/tails results.

Heads vs Tails Records in Super Bowls

Heads/Tails All-Time Record All-Time Win% Record in Last 10 Win% in Last 10
Heads 27-30 47.4% 3-7 30%
Tails 30-27 52.6% 7-3 70%

Even though the probability of each outcome (heads or tails) is split 50-50, the actual outcomes slightly favor tails right now thanks to the recent trend. After Super Bowl 48, we were tied 24-24. Tails has just rarely failed lately.

Tails currently holds the advantage with a 30-27 record over heads. That means tails has happened in 52.6% of Super Bowl coin tosses.

Carl Cheffers has flipped 17 coins this season and the visiting team, which is the side who always calls the toss, has only won seven of those, which includes going 0-1 in the playoffs. (Cheffers had Wild Card Weekend off.)

The Chiefs haven’t had much luck calling coin tosses this year, going just 3-6. Kansas City is 10-9 overall in coin tosses, which includes going 2-0 in the playoffs—neither of which they called since they were the home team in both.

Philadelphia probably wishes it was calling the toss, as they’ve been incredible when they get the chance to call it. The Eagles are 7-1 when they get the choice, but just 6-5 when their opponent calls it. This includes being 0-2 in the postseason, where their opponent has called both tosses. Philadelphia is 13-6 overall in coin tosses this season.
