The Arizona Cardinals were founded in 1898 in Illinois as the Chicago Cardinals. The franchise has since then relocated to Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and finally, Arizona.
A rather awkward time in the history of the franchise came with the temporary 1944 merger of the Chicago Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers. After an underwhelming 0-10 season, the merger was dissolved shortly thereafter.
Despite having one of the longest existences in the NFL, the Cardinals have never won a Super Bowl in the Lombardi era.
In Super Bowl 33, The Cardinals looked to have their first Super Bowl title, until Ben Roethlisberger marched the Steelers down the field and found Santonio Holmes in the corner of the end zone with 35 second remaining.
Losing seasons are a dime a dozen for Cardinals fans, and if you bet on them last couple seasons, well … history repeated itself. The Cardinals are just 13-17-2 ATS over the last two years.
It’s safe to say the Arizona Cardinals are in “rebuild” mode, but the foundations of that rebuild are hopefully in place in the form of first-year head coach Kliff Kingsbury and first-overall pick Kyler Murray at QB. Kingsbury brings his air-raid offense from the college ranks, which should play to Murray’s strengths. The pair will also have the forgotten-about David Johnson at their disposal at running back. Still just 25 years old, Johnson is a lethal threat both on the ground and through the air as long as everything around him isn’t falling to pieces.
Former Texas A&M standout Christian Kirk is entering his second year and should put up better numbers in Kingsbury’s system, while rookie Andy Isabella represents an interesting weapon in the slot.
The defense, which finished 18th in DVOA last year, is going to be a problem. And while All Pro CB Patrick Peterson is suspended for the first six games of the year, it’s going to be a terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad problem. But this is a rebuild year where the most important thing is developing Murray and the other young players who will be the foundation of Arizona’s next competitive team a couple seasons down the road.
