The Washington Redskins have appeared in five Super Bowls with a 3-2 record, ranking fifth all-time in Super Bowl wins. The team has a long history dating back to 1932, however, suffered through years of futility in their early years.
From 1946-1970 they only managed four winning seasons and made zero playoff appearances.
As the last NFL franchise to integrate, it was even more historical when they became the first team to win a Super Bowl with an African-American quarterback. In Super Bowl 22, Doug Williams was named MVP in a 42-10 win over the Denver Broncos.
Washington has been led by some of the most successful names in coaching over the years, including Vince Lombardi and Joe Gibbs. Since 2013 Jay Gruden has been the team’s head coach and he has posted a 28-35-2 record.
In 2018, Jay Gruden’s fifth year with the team, the Redskins finished 7-9 for the second straight year, missing the playoffs for a third straight season. Their 7-9 was actually an overachievement as they had a -78 point difference (third-worst in the NFC) and finished 29th overall in DVOA (28th on offense and 20th on defense).
That’s not likely to improve much this year. Dwayne Haskins, their 2019 first-round pick, could develop into a franchise QB in time, but it’s not likely to be this year. That’s especially true with star OL Trent Williams on the way out. The cupboards are bare at receiver and, no matter who is starting (Haskins, Colt McCoy or Case Keenum), there is not much hope that this can be an above-average offense.
The defense should be respectable, but doesn’t have the playmakers to turn an anemic attack into a playoff contender.
