One of the most storied franchises in NFL history first got its wings when a group led by Bert Bell and Lud Wray bought the Frankford Yellow Jackets in 1933, renaming them the Philadelphia Eagles.

They won NFL championships in 1948 and 1949, and another in 1959.

That started a lengthy title drought in the City of Brotherly Love, with some memorable personalities and eras that shaped the organization.

The Dick Vermeil-coached squads were fun, and reached the Super Bowl in 1980, falling to the Raiders.

The Andy Reid era delivered both joy (six division titles, nine playoff appearances) and pain (Super Bowl 39 loss to the Patriots, Terrell Owens and Donovan McNabb drama, the ‘Dream Team’ nightmare).

And the team is still trying to forget the Chip Kelly blip.

Things turned quickly, however, when front office superstar Howie Roseman appointed Doug Pederson to be their new head coach, and moved up in the 2016 NFL Draft to select franchise pivot Carson Wentz.

In 2017, they ranked third in offensive DVOA, leading the NFL in scoring before Wentz went down in Week 14, while also holding steady at fifth in defensive DVOA.

The Eagles roster was so strong and well-coached that season-ending injuries to Wentz and nine-time Pro Bowl LT Jason Peters weren’t able to derail the train, as the Eagles marched all the way to Super Bowl 52, downing the Patriots with backup Nick Foles for the franchise’s first Super Bowl championship.

In 2018, they lost Wentz for a few games to both start and end the year, and he honestly wasn’t as productive when he was healthy. Foles took the team to three straight wins and a playoff berth, but the magic ran out in the Divisional Round when they were nipped 20-14 in New Orleans.

Heading into 2019, the pressure is entirely on Wentz (to stay healthy) as Foles is now in Jacksonville. But that pressure is lessened by the supporting cast around him, which ranks as arguably the deepest and most talented in the NFL when the offense and defense are taken as a whole.
