The New York Giants are a long-standing, and respected, football club around the National Football League. They were founded in 1925 by Tim Mara with an investment of $500.
They are often referred to as the “Football Giants” due to the New York Giants baseball team, at the time of their establishment. The name continues to stick.
Giants football was never overly popular in the early days, and struggled to draw crowds during the mid to late 20s. The historical success of the franchise was all thanks to Red Grange and the Chicago Bears, after coming to town and bringing more than 70,000 fans with them.
Interestingly enough, the Giants are widely credited for legitimizing the professional game after raising $115,000 dollars for the homeless in a 1930 charity game against the Notre Dame All-Stars.
Looking to the current iteration of the team, what was once the life of their offense is now their downfall, as Eli Manning is has declined and will now be working without top receiver, Odell Beckham Jr, who was dealt to the Browns.
At least the team still has productive-if-overdrafted Saquon Barkley in the backfield and first-round QB Daniel Jones pushing Manning for the starting role. This roster is still filled with holes, but Jones and Barkley should instill a little optimism in fans of the G Men.
The defense, which finished 24th in DVOA last year, is going to be leaky, in all likelihood, but once Jones takes over the reins of the offense, New York should at least become an exciting watch.
