When Lamar Hunt moved his Dallas Texans to Kansas City in 1960, he started a love affair between a franchise and one of the most loyal and dedicated fan bases in all of sports.
The Chiefs are one of the AFLs oldest and most respected franchises. Their early success, three AFL championships in the first decade, caught the cities curiosity. And winning Super Bowl 4 against the Minnesota Vikings gave the Chiefs Kansas City’s undivided attention.
But the fanbase is rightfully growing a little impatient waiting for another championship. Fortunately, the past five seasons under head coach Andy Reid have provided some hope.
The 2018 season was one of the best in franchise history. Patrick Mahomes won NFL MVP in his first season as starter, posting video-game-like numbers (50 TDs, 12 INTs, 113.8 passer rating).
Tyreek Hill’s world class ability to take the top off a defense certainly helped, but he was far from the only threat on the KC offense. Travis Kelce, Sammy Watkins, Damien Williams, and rookie Mecole Hardman will make defending the Chiefs’ attack a monumental task for any defense.
On defense, the 2018 Chiefs were awful, and it wound up costing them in their losses, including their 37-31 setback to the Patriots in the AFC Championship. They took steps to remedy that in the offseason, bringing in Frank Clark, Tyrann Mathieu, Kendall Fuller, and Alex Okafor. If they can pair their alarmingly effecitve offense with even a league-average defense, this may be the Super Bowl favorite.
